JOANNA MONKS
My work explores the fields of moving image, print, sound, writing and the spoken word. In addition to an interest in the materiality of different media and processes, my work is driven by a fascination with narrative, identity and interaction.
Much of my work is preoccupied with the use of stories and nuances in communication. In video and sound works I explore the suggestions and connotations evoked through spoken stories, as well as the relationship between these sounds and images. I look at folklore and story telling in relation to the environment and landscape, to question how we form our identities.
Other series of work question how to present the confusion of communication. In an exploration of notions of understanding, the works follow ideas of paths, navigation and memory. Movement and fluidity, transparency and reflectivity sit contrasted to jolted and heavier, almost violent works where surfaces are gauged through. Ruptures and gaps; traces and scars; limitations and antagonism; residues and imprints.
